Dennis Prager produces really great content that you can check out here. In addition to the regular strafes of truth bombs he drops on the Left, he wrote an article for the National Review in which he poses the question “Does the Left believe what they say?”
After some of the recent events in the news cycle I found myself wondering the same thing.
The Left seem to be looking for certain events to happen in order to prove a point they’re trying to make. Even if it means attempting to produce such events to advance the narrative.
They then launch into unending productions of content full of commentary about why these “hate-crimes” happen, why racism is “systemic”, why the Vice President is homophobic, why the world will end in twelve years, why Conservatives are bad and all the rest of it. But, do they really believe these things they say, or do they knowingly lie to reach the goals they want and just hope some of it sticks? That’s Prager’s question.
“Truth is not a Left-wing value”
He offers two potential explanations. He says, “On the left, truth is subservient to two higher values: doctrine and emotion. Truth is not a left-wing value.”
Prager then offers some logical explanations of this, namely, that advancing their doctrine/ideology is viewed as the greater good for people and thus lying to perpetuate it is deemed acceptable for the people’s own good.
Second, that in the absence of sound, rational arguments, emotional arguments are all they have to use. I presume he’s referring to the idea that the emotions created by covetousness toward those who’ve made something of themselves is too hard to bear, so everything must be made “fair” by force of law- even if it’s unfair to those who’ve made something of themselves. Thus, billionaires are “immoral”.
Then, to gain support for their cause, they must do all they can to muster the same emotions they feel in the American people. Their arguments then all become emotional ones and not rational ones.
Walking bundles of contradictions
Prager offers great logical explanations, including evidences that the Left does not believe what they say, evidences like:
“It is simply not possible to believe fossil-fuel emissions will destroy the world and, at the same time, oppose nuclear power. Nuclear power is clean and safe.”
“The left tells us that colleges are permeated by a ‘rape culture,’ yet virtually all left-wing parents send their daughters to college.”
And in reference to one of the Left’s current mantra’s, “Walls don’t work.” Prager replies, “It is inconceivable that people who say this — especially those with walls around their home — believe it.”
All these, he suggests, are possible evidences that the Left knows they’re dishonest.
A Biblical explanation of Leftism
I would like to offer a simple, Biblical explanation that suggests many Leftist leaders do actually believe what they say and are instead simply walking bundles of contradictions completely unaware of their own cognitive dissonance.
Truth, as Prager says, is “not a Left-wing value”. This is because, while all unregenerate people are in bondage to their sin nature, the Bible teaches that the more one rejects truth, the further in darkness they become.
I’m saying that if a Leftist leader is not saved/born-again/regenerate, then they are in bondage to their sin nature. What I am not saying is that someone is unsaved just by virtue of being on the Left (Though I do believe that someone who gets saved will naturally move away from the Left).
When one is in bondage to their nature, they often suppress the truth when it is presented. Truth conflicts with their nature. It consequently then hurts to think about truth.
To suppress truth then drives someone deeper into untruth, deeper into spiritual darkness, and deeper into hardness of heart to the point they call clearly heinous things like infanticide, a “woman’s right to choose”.
And that’s merely one example. Consider some of what Romans chapter 1 has to say about those who suppress the knowledge of truth:
Vs 21 “[they] became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Vs 22 “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools…”
Vs 25 “Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator.”
I particularly see the abortion issue being an application of that last verse, e.g. “my body, my choice”.
Vss 28-30 “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents…”
I don’t want to sound like I’m using the Bible as a club, but to be honest, I see a lot of Leftist tendencies in that list. Not that right-leaning politicians have never fit that description before, but just from an observational standpoint, that list is a shoe that seems almost a perfect fit for the Left foot as a movement. (Note: I do recognize a difference between “liberal” and “left”.)
Results observed in society
While not all on leaders on the Left are perhaps this far, undoubtedly many are. And it’s becoming increasingly more common. This is because one does not invent and promulgate the moral corruptions of the Left and come to think that those are acceptable without first plugging their ears to much obvious truths written on their conscience by God (See Romans 2:14-15).
That is how you end up with a society that glorifies “free love”, normalizes promiscuity, celebrates the murder of the unborn, puts intersectionality in place of Biblical individualism, accepts the legalized theft that is Socialism- and thinks that all of that is good.
Here’s my point: They’re effectively not lying to people because they have deceived themselves first. They see their own values as truth. Any inconsistencies like what Prager exposes are essentially what some have termed “cognitive dissonance” or ignored contradictions.
To one who suppresses the innate knowledge of God’s truth on the conscience, wrong begins to look right, and right begins to look wrong. And they have no idea it’s happening to them! They become completely convinced that all they stand for is justifiable and fundamental to a cause they now view as righteous.
Prager concludes that he ultimately does not and can not know if the Left believes their lies or not, to which I must concur as well. Though I have a hunch many do believe them.
Many, I think, are simply convinced that what they stand for is right and can hardly fathom that anyone would disagree with, what to them are obviously holy causes. They’re left to think that all who disagree with them must do so out of hate, because, “I’m so right, what else could it be but hate?!”
It makes we wonder how we ended up here, with all of this. And that reminds of a quote attributed to Edmund Burke which says:
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.”
Perhaps the Left is testament to periods of complacency among the Right? Perhaps the Left is an inevitable fulfillment of the Scriptures proclamation that “evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived”.
I suppose only time will tell.
